The AI4COPSEC project was prominently represented at the Living Planet Symposium (LPS) 2025 by two of its partners: AISTECH and eOdyn. The Living Planet Symposium (LPS) is the European Space Agency’s premier Earth-observation event, held once every three years. The most recent edition—Living Planet Symposium 2025—took place in Vienna, Austria, from June 23 to 27, 2025.
The participation of AI4COPSEC partners AISTECH and eOdyn formed a key part of the project’s dissemination strategy, highlighting advances in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Earth Observation (EO) technologies to maritime safety and security.
Our partners Paulo de Urmeneta, Sonia Navarro and Davide Giglio, from AISTECH also attended technical sessions focused on the integration of AI in EO workflows, covering a wide array of use cases including oil spill detection and segmentation from satellite imagery, as well as Land Surface Temperature (LST) downscaling algorithms. These topics are directly relevant to AI4COPSEC’s mission to harness thermal data for improving maritime situational awareness.
The sessions offered valuable insights into enhancing detection models for oil spills and vessels under complex environmental conditions—knowledge that will directly support AI4COPSEC’s work on combating illegal fishing and strengthening search and rescue (SAR) capabilities.
A notable highlight of the symposium was the oral presentation of the two selectied abstracts related to AI4COPSEC work, one from AISTECH and one from eOdyn presented by Gwenaele Jan (presenter) and Alexey Mironov (author). In addition, eOdyn presented two posters showcasing their contributions to the project. These presentations underlined the technical relevance and innovation potential of AI4COPSEC in addressing global maritime challenges through cutting-edge AI and EO integration.
The strong presence of both partners at LPS 2025 underscored AI4COPSEC’s collaborative approach and its commitment to advancing the role of AI in Earth Observation for security and environmental protection.
