THEME

AI & Earth Observation
for Safer EU Borders

About this workshop

Maritime security increasingly depends on the ability to transform complex and fragmented data into timely, actionable insights. As activities and risks at Europe’s sea borders evolve, combining artificial intelligence, Earth observation and multiple data sources can provide authorities with a clearer picture of vessel behaviour, movement patterns and emerging threats, supporting faster and better-informed responses.

AI4COPSEC and CROSSMARE address these challenges from complementary perspectives. AI4COPSEC applies advanced AI and data-fusion methods to enhance Copernicus Security Services, while CROSSMARE develops cross-domain interoperability, sensing, AI-assisted decision support and CISE-compliant information-sharing capabilities for more connected maritime surveillance.

This workshop—the second joint workshop organised by AI4COPSEC and the first in collaboration with CROSSMARE—will examine how AI-driven risk assessment can help detect and interpret complex maritime situations, from unusual fishing activity to sensitive cross-border movements. It will also explore how resulting insights can be securely shared across borders and agencies to enable more coordinated and effective action.

CROSSMARE  aims to transform European maritime surveillance and strengthen the security of EU sea borders through an innovative, multi-domain interoperability framework. The project combines advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, and cross-border collaboration to deliver a unified and more effective approach to maritime situational awareness.

AI4COPSEC enhances the Copernicus Security Service with AI and machine learning, GeoAI and the fusion of multiple data sources (satellite Earth observation, vessel and ocean data, open-source intelligence and in-situ sensors) to improve maritime and border surveillance across its four operational use cases.
