The AI4COPSEC project was presented during the European Commission workshop “Artificial Intelligence and Earth Observation: from Innovation to Services”, held on 9–10 March 2026 in Brussels and online. Organised by DG DEFIS with the support of HaDEA, the event gathered policymakers, Copernicus users, industry, researchers and IT experts to explore how AI, machine learning, big data and high-performance computing are transforming Earth observation (EO) services in Europe.

AI4COPSEC was highlighted in Session 7: Research & Innovation — AI for Earth Observation, moderated by Massimo Ciscato (HaDEA, European Commission). The session focused on the transition of AI solutions from research to operational EO services, attracting around 80–90 participants.

The session opened with Marko Curavic, Head of Unit for Space Research at HaDEA, who presented the Horizon Europe portfolio supporting AI in EO and space research. He emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between AI innovation and operational Copernicus services.

During the panel discussion, our technical coordinator Yann Guichoux (eOdyn) presented AI4COPSEC, highlighting how AI-driven approaches can enhance the exploitation of Copernicus data for security-related applications. The project contributes to the development of trustworthy, scalable and operational EO services, aligned with Europe’s ambition to strengthen the integration of AI into Copernicus.

The discussion also explored broader challenges such as AI efficiency, trustworthy data infrastructures and the need for cross-disciplinary expertise. Speakers highlighted the importance of maintaining Europe’s capacity to provide accessible and reliable EO data, while strengthening collaboration between academia, industry and EU institutions.

Overall, the workshop showcased how initiatives like AI4COPSEC support the transition from research innovation to operational Earth observation services, while contributing to the future development of the European EO and AI ecosystem.
