On 25 February, the CENTAUR project held its second workshop in Brussels, marking the culmination of three years of research, development and operational validation at the crossroads of Earth Observation (EO), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and crisis management. The event gathered experts and decision-makers from European institutions, agencies, research organisations and industry to assess CENTAUR’s results and their relevance for the future evolution of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) and the Copernicus Security Service (SESA).
Among the panelists was Edoardo Camilli (HOZINT), who presented AI4COPSEC and contributed to the discussion on strengthening early-warning systems through AI and EO integration.
The workshop opened with keynote speeches from HADEA and the European Commission, highlighting the strategic role of EO in preventive forecasting and emergency response. During the panel, Maria Tamame (SatCen) presented CENTAUR’s approach; Danielle Monsuf (World Bank) shared insights on satellite imagery for water management and crisis response in South Sudan; and Koen de Vos and Jordi Cerda Bautista outlined the technical aspects of disaster forecasting. Edoardo Camilli showcased the integration of EO and thermal imagery within a situational awareness platform to support operational decision-making.
The discussion addressed collaboration across institutions and industry, data integration and interoperability challenges, barriers to transitioning from pilot projects to sustained operations, user needs, dataset limitations, and the importance of trustworthy and responsible AI.
Key challenges identified included limited data integration, diverse user requirements across governance levels, regulatory constraints such as GDPR, and insufficient exploitation of solutions after project completion. In the afternoon, participants explored the CENTAUR platform through a live simulation of a natural disaster scenario in Mozambique. The workshop concluded with a networking session, reinforcing cooperation among stakeholders working to advance AI- and EO-enabled early-warning systems.
