AI4COPSEC partner Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM) will present new project research at the 2026 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for the Sea (MetroSea), taking place from 5–7 October 2026 in Šibenik, Croatia.

The paper, “Multi-Modal Deep Learning for Marine Oil Spill Detection: A Multi-Encoder Approach Using SAR, Optical, and Synthetic Thermal Satellite Imagery,” has been accepted for presentation at the conference.

The research investigates how multi-modal deep learning can combine different sources of Earth Observation data – including SAR, optical and synthetic thermal satellite imagery – to enhance the detection of marine oil spills.

This work contributes to AI4COPSEC’s efforts to develop AI-powered tools for faster and more reliable marine pollution detection and response, strengthening the potential of Copernicus data and advanced AI methods for maritime monitoring.

MetroSea 2026 brings together researchers, industry representatives and stakeholders working on measurement, monitoring and technological solutions for the marine environment.
